Here We Grow Again

September 17, 2015 by Katrina Leave a Comment

Our little family will be growing by two little feet in March!

We are excited, surprised, and blessed!

Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him. Children born to a young man are like arrows in a warrior’s hands. How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them! He will not be put to shame when he confronts his accusers at the city gates.

Psalm 127:3-5

{Anyone out there with 3 kids? What kind of car do you drive?? We may need something bigger and I am open to any suggestions you friends have!}

Whitney: 11 Months Old

How can my baby be 11 months old?? The last month of your life has been chocked full of both good and bad,  and you handled both like a big girl. Let’s start with the bad…

The day we sold our house you, me, and Libby were rushing to get out of the house so someone could come show the house. I turned my back for 2 seconds to help your sister and you pulled my flat iron down on your arm. It clamped on and you received second degree burns on the top and bottom of your arm. Thank goodness for Aunt Lauren! She got you all taken care of pretty quickly and you won’t have any scarring. Once she put the burn cream on you, you immediately settled down and never cried about your arm again {even when they had to cut the skin off a few days later}. You were a rock star!!

You had your first Steel City pop this month and you loved it! You sampled the buttermilk, chocolate, and caramel. The chocolate was hands down your favorite!

You thought the moving process was awesome. You loved the boxes everywhere, they were like your little jungle gym.

You moved out of the baby carseat to your sisters old carseat. You look tiny in it but you meet all the requirements to ride in it. You seem to like this carseat much better and are a much happier rider now! You did great on the eight hour drive to Tennessee! All you need is a movie and a snack 🙂

You are eating table food like a big girl. In fact, most meals you out eat your sister! Fruit is your favorite. This month you also started eating oatmeal, chicken, beef, waffles, and sandwiches. Pretty much what I eat you think you have to eat!

You LOVE the parks near our house. You are so happy to get down and play with your sister or swing. After we play we always have a snack in the stroller while I walk you and Libby around. You always fall asleep during our park walks. Playing wears you out!

Speaking of playing…you and Libby love to play in your crib. It always starts out as just playing but soon it turns into a trampoline. You cackle like it is the best thing ever while you are jumping!

When we first moved your sleeping pattern got messed up and you wouldn’t sleep at night. After one night of you crying it out, you are now doing much better!! Back to sleeping 10+ hours each night.

You also love the buggies at Target. You think you are BIG riding next to Libby. Your momma loved the three point harness that held you in place!

You are still our happy baby girl! You aren’t walking yet but you can run while holding on to furniture. You can say dada, you call me gaga, and you say hey. You have six teeth. Playing with Libby is your favorite thing to do!

We love you dearly and cannot wait to celebrate your first birthday!

Reading Aloud…Chapter Book Edition

August 27, 2015 by Katrina Leave a Comment

Today the teacher in me is taking over to talk about reading aloud to children. I am a firm believer that adults should read aloud to children of all ages. I remember my parents reading to me as a child. My dad tells me about how my mom would read to me when I was still in her stomach. I can also remember teachers reading out loud to us in school, and I remember that as some of my favorite times in school.

When I became a teacher I knew reading aloud to students was something I would always make time for. No, it doesn’t fit naturally in my schedule, but I make it fit because it is important to me. I usually read aloud to my classes when I need them to settle down. With my first class that time is after P.E. and with my second class it is after lunch. We take 10 minutes or so and I read. I read in funny voices, I yell, I whisper, sometimes I even jump around. I read to them, plain and simple. My kids tell me this is their favorite part of their day…mine too!

I have a collection of chapter books that sit on a bookshelf behind my desk. All the other books in the room are fair game for them to take and read at their choosing. But these are the books I read to them. I let my classes vote on what they read. I pick two or three, tell them about each one, and let them vote on what they want to read. This gives them ownership of the story. Today I am sharing a few of the chapter books I read aloud to my kiddos…

This is the first book I read. It is short and so funny! This sets the tone that this is a “fun” reading time, not our required reading.

This is great for teaching children to think for themselves.

Roald Dahl is a must read aloud…they are great!

There are many, many great chapter books out there for kids, these are some of my personal favs. So let me encourage you if you are a teacher, a parent, or a babysitter, to always read aloud to kids. They will love it and you will too!
